About

The National Affordable Housing Corporation (NAHC) is a non-profit organization based in Saskatoon, Sask.

We’re part of a network of non-profits across Canada that helps low-to-moderate income individuals, couples and families find affordable housing answers. Working with the private sector, government and other nonprofits, we’ve helped build 1100+ new affordable homes in Saskatchewan and partnered on nearly 25 multi-family affordable housing projects. We currently operate 111 affordable rentals in Saskatoon and Regina, including some designated to people with additional housing challenges (health diagnoses, mental health challenges).

We're leading the province in energy-efficient technologies in rentals. Many of these units are EnergyStar® certified and rated energy efficient, giving residents ongoing affordability through lower utility costs. Our newest projects have solar energy and air source heat pump combinations. We have Net Zero Energy affordable rentals in Regina, Sask., and we plan to increase our environmental stewardship by applying our learnings from that project to future rentals as we expand across the prairie provinces.

History

Founded in 2011, the NAHC began its housing journey delivering financial literacy, budgeting, credit building and homeowner education to families. The workshops helped people pay down debts, save money, and build or fix their credit so they could get a mortgage and become first-time homeowners.

In 2012, we started to offer the NAHC’s first monthly rental support program to help low-to-moderate individuals and families afford safe new rentals in good areas amid rising rental rates and increasing costs of living in Saskatchewan. We also began working with builder partners and government funders to deliver down payment assistance programs and tax sponsorships to help 1st-time homeowners get mortgages for government approved affordable new homes.

Through builder partners and government funding, were able to deliver down payment assistance programs and tax sponsorship to help families become 1st-time homeowners of government-approved affordable new homes.

In 2012, we also began delivering a Monthly Rental Support Program in partnership with the Government of Saskatchewan. The program was used to lower rents for households renting in approved new rentals so tenants could afford a quality, safe and appropriate rental for their families.

In 2018, the NAHC expanded its focus to leverage the team's development history and expertise so we could begin growing a unique new model of mixed affordable rentals.

In 2020, beginning with Willowview Heights, we introduced a partnership model that works with community groups to house people with higher needs.

As of 2024, the NAHC portfolio has 25% affordable units, and houses 38 higher-needs renters through partnerships with Inclusion Saskatchewan, Creative Options Regina, and Canadian Mental Health Association – Saskatoon. Together with our many community partners, the NAHC has contributed millions of dollars to the creation of new affordable housing units and supportive affordable housing programs in Saskatchewan. We have millions of dollars invested in various stages of rental operation, lease up, construction and development.
